The ligating clip can be opened in two ways. You can either slide it open from the gingival aspect or using the hole in the clip.

Up to an archwire dimension of .018"x.018" or .016" x .022" the clip remains passive

Active clip:
The clip becomes increasingly active once the archwire dimension goes beyond .018" x .018" or .016" x .022" Fully

Activated clip:
The clip is fully activated with archwires .018" x .025" (.018" slot) or .022" x .025" (.022" slot).
